Frida Kahlo - Jane Perkins

It is important to be innovative as an artist because it keeps your work current and your followers interested. For example, I am really inspired by traditional fairy tale illustration but, the fairy tales aren't relatable anymore and they often show women in domestic roles and having to wait for a prince to save them and whisk them away to new lives. In my work I am trying to push the boundaries of illustration by combining it with other specialisms such as; textiles, fashion and digital design. The definition of innovation is; a new method, idea or product. In my work I am trying to comment on contemporary issues and campaigns that are in favour of women and are protesting against sexual harassment and assault on women, and trying to protest against women being payed less than men.

Girl with a Pearl Earring - Jane Perkins

Jane Perkins is an innovative artist who categorises herself as a ‘re-maker’ and uses recycled materials to create new art. Jane Perkins current body of work is entitled ‘Plastic Classics’. For the creation of this collection, Jane takes unwanted objects and uses collage techniques influenced by her background in textiles to create reproductions of artworks by the old masters. Jane Perkins re-created 'The Girl with the Pearl Earring' using old buttons and bits of old plastic. Tracy Chevalier, author of the novel Girl with a Pearl Earring, praised Jane’s interpretation of the painting by the same name by writing “Jane Perkins has taken the portrait a step beyond and made it her own – a textured image that I bet would have made Vermeer smile“.
